Dog Patch Sympathy

Coming up with a project that seems appeasing to me is harder than I thought. Fortunately, I came up with one. I play in the Lexington Fiddle Group "Dog Patch Sympathy" and we are a public service that play for about any occasion. Around December I asked my group if they would like to play for my geriatric patients at Lexington Extended Care, an extension of Lexington Medical Center, and faithfully they said yes. I always wanted to give something to the elderly and I feel that a little music therapy would do just the thing. Recently, we have played for a celebration of aging, which was a gathering of over 60 Senior Citizens. We also played for an audience at Lexington Extended Care and plan to play at many other retirement/assisted living homes.
The Fiddle Group includes: Me (senior, violin); Heather Porth (senior, violin); Elizabeth Wyndham (senior, bass); Johanna Jesowski (junior, violin); Andrew Chaveria (junior, violin); Diane Vaught (sophomore, violin); Jonathan Wyndham (freshman, guitar-master); Johanna Pollock (our great sponsor and teacher).

Gift Baskets

My community service project is hopefully going in December. I was searching through the Community Service book, trying to find something right for me. Like always, I wanted to do something for the elderly. In the book I found a great ideal, which was to make gift baskets. The elderly people in my community, just like in most quickly developing communities, are being pushed into the background. There are plenty community service projects at my school occuring at the same time but a few to none including the appreciation of our senior citizens. Hopefully, this ideal will be successful and may be accompanied by others. I am pretty sure that my grandfather would enjoy this. What do you think? Do you think that this would be boring? I would still have to find sponsors to put items in the baskets and the baskets themselves. Please tell me what you think.

Last night I got a chance to talk to one of my town's councils, Kathy Maness. She, of course, told me that I should try doing voter registration. I took upon that ideal and got the forms today. Everyone wanting to sign up has to be signed up before October 7, so this project is going to go quickly. Talk to everyone later!

Different Day, Different Plan

I came to a conclusion that all my ideas sound half-baked. In affilation with JCL (Junior Classical League), I will confer with my peers and city officials to find what my community really needs. In JCL, I am the school president and any good president would speerhead a great community service project. Another Day, Another Idea.

My vision is to have a walk for diabesity. Diabesity is a mixing of the words diabetes and obesity. Being Overweight and obesity are predictors of type 2 diabetes, and obesity is indeed an insulin resistant state. In particular people with central obesity, where fat collects around the waist, are most likely to become insulin resisitant. It is no coincidence that cases of type 2 diabetes have escalated in line with the global rise in the scale of overweight and obesity so that type 2 diabetes is being nicknamed "Diabesity."

Riley's Institute At Furman University

My time at the Riley's Institute was ultimately life changing. It is always a wonderful and pleasureable sight to see people doing what they love. I would like to thank the program director, Brooke Culclasure, the counselors, and everyone else including the Ph.D.s that made it possible. I loved every part of the week long camp or in better words, emergence. I even loved the part when the counselors sent the twenty of us on a Scavenger Hunt that included the entire campus. The crazy and most exciting thing was, when we were doing this my group got lost and then all of a sudden the counselors appear; we then crept our way to them explaining that we were lost; they continued to try and bring us to them with the white lie, "We have a map, come see, we'll show you the way." As we moved closer, they started to throw waterballons at us. We ran like the night runs away from the day, quickly and hidden. Although, some days were long with a 4:30am bedtime and a 8:00am wakeup, I think that I had one of the most passionate, exciting, interesting, broading, experiences in my life. I only hope that any rising high school seniors will want to be part of this program. Even if you passion isn't Political Science, just to be part of something meaningful is great enough.
